Dealing with Drains:

Drain clogs happen, so it is a good thing to know how to unclog them. It is also good to know and practice good prevention methods. By being careful about what is and isn’t put down the drain, we can help insure that the clog never forms in the first place.

Most drain clogs can be cleared by the home owner or resident, without intervention by a professional plumber. You may succeed with home drain cleaning methods. If the clog is not too bad, hot water alone may do the trick. You can also use baking soda and vinegar, followed by hot water. That won’t hurt anything, at least, and may do the job. You may choose to use commercial drain clearing products. Please remember that those are toxic and dangerous if used improperly. You must be careful to follow all warnings and directions with care. Follow with lots of water if the drain opens.

In the case that prevention fails to prevent the clog, and clearing attempts don’t succeed, there is always the plumber nearby. Your local plumbing professional is ready and able to clear that clog for you and get your plumbing ready to go again.

Septic Tank Location:

If you need to locate your septic tank, perhaps you can find it yourself, without calling the plumber. Why might you need to find your septic tank, you ask? Well, if you have a septic tank problem, you already know why. If not, you may be a wise person wanting to do some maintenance, in order to prevent problems. Or you may be a thoughtful person, wanting to provide documentation of the location of the septic tank to a future buyer or perhaps an inheriting descendent. All these are good reasons, which brings us to how. How do you locate a septic tank, should you need to?

You might be able to take a metal probe and poke around for the tank, or you could use a metal detecting locator. There are some problems you might encounter, especially if you have an older home. Restrictions were lax or non-existent then. You could be looking for whatever some crafty homebody thought would work, rather than a commercially manufactured septic tank. You might run into something that isn’t even a septic tank, perhaps one of the Crypt Keepers long lost crypts, or, well, they never found Jimmy Hoffa, did they? If you find the wrong thing, or nothing at all in your self-powered search, it may be time to call in the plumbing professionals. Your local plumbing company can find the septic tank for you, and supply you with good plumbing advice and professional assistance as well.

New Water Heater, a Good Idea?

How is your water heater holding up? Is it old, inefficient, and doubtful as to reliability? This might be a great time call your local plumber about a new water heater. Not only will a new highly-efficient water heater save you on your energy bill, it will help save the Earth’s resources as well. If you are considering a new natural gas water heater, you will be pleased to find out that natural gas water heaters are among the best and most fuel-efficient types available today.

If you are contemplating a tankless, on-demand type water heater, there are natural gas models that are excellent choices. The natural gas on-demand systems can deliver twice as much or more than the electric styles. This high delivery rate makes them practical for a household of up to two people, or perhaps more if they practice reasonable hot water usage. Even though natural gas on-demand water heaters are more effective than the electric type, they still may not be the best choice for you if you have a large family, and high demand for hot water. A natural gas storage tank style water heater would be better for you in that situation. Your local plumbing contractor can help you figure out your needs, and plan an installation that will work well for you and your family.

Dealing with Drain Clogs:

When faced with a clogged drain, most of us probably reach for the plunger first. That can be the right move, too. But in some situations it may not be enough. A sink or drain clog may need to be cleared by removing the drain cover, or even by removing the p-trap under the sink and clearing a clog there.

A clogged toilet is a real nuisance, and one that is bound to happen from time to time. You can try the plunger here, then move on to the snake if no relief is found in the plunger. If the problem is beyond the reach of your plumber’s auger, the situation is probably best left to a plumber. You local qualified plumbing professional will have the equipment and expertise to manage your plumbing emergency.

Home Furnace Considerations:

Most of us, and especially those of us who live in warmer climates, where the heating system is not used for much of the year, tend to take our home heating systems for granted. But when it gets cool outside and we want to warm our homes, we expect to turn the heat on and have the warm air start circulating. Most often that is what does happen, but in case it doesn’t, or if you are planning a new system in a new home, it is good to know something about the basics of home furnaces.

Traditionally furnaces have used gas and heating oil, but now we have more and more types of alternatively fueled furnaces on the market. You may be amazed at the variety of fuels available. Furnace fuels include shelled corn, fruit pits, and a variety of pellets produced from manufacturing waste. Cardboard pellets are available, as well as wood pellets. It is a good thing to avoid waste and get useĀ  out of what used to be trash. But your heating system needs to be practical for you and for the area you live in. For reliable advice, call on your local heating contractor for an assessment of your heating needs.
