When to Call a Heating Contractor

November 9th, 2017

It often seems that just when we need our heating systems the most, they fail. There are things you can do at home before calling a heating professional.  Having a heating system that will not start, is certainly frustrating. However, before investing in that service call try these simple steps.

Check to see if you have blown a fuse. Many times, a blown fuse is the reason you are here will not start. Whether you have a breaker box or standard fuse box, this may be the easiest step you can take.

Heating systems all have reset buttons.  You will normally find a red button on the side of your furnace. Simply press the button, hold it for the time recommended release, and see if your furnace will turn on. It is important to note, that if your system went out suddenly, you may have to wait up to 30 minutes.

Many homes have a separate switch to control the heating system. For some reason, these switches always seem to be in easy reach. Fortunately, if this is your problem turning the switch back on should bring your heating system back on nearly immediately.

As much as this may sound like common sense, you will also need to check the levels of your fuel. If you heat with oil or propane, make sure you have sufficient levels to run your furnace. For those who keep with natural gas, verify there has been nothing that has caused your gas or pilot to be shut off.

Verify that your thermostat is working properly. Consider increasing your thermostat by upwards of 10° to see if your system will turn back on. Do not forget whether this works or not, to turn back to your normal levels.

Only after performing these steps should you consider contacting a heating professional. Chances are that these five tips can save you time and money.
