Clean-out installations in plumbing

September 21st, 2018

Clean-outs are installed in sewage lines to provide an access location for cleaning and removing blockage. Floor cleanouts are commonly set into the flooring of a residence or business to provide an access point inside the building. Code requirements will most likely be in place for the location of clean-outs and clean-outs inside homes or commercial buildings require cover plates. Decorative cover plates are available to make the area less obtrusive.

Floor clean-outs should be set into the flooring before the foundation is poured. They can also be installed later but this should be done by a professional plumbing contractor. The exact location of the underground plumbing line must be known before the concrete is torn up. The installation also must be done correctly and to any code requirements. On occasions, an additional clean out may be added if a section of plumbing is difficult to maintain due to the location of the original cleanout.

Clean-outs can also be installed in above ground plumbing to make maintenance easier. Clean-outs can be beneficial under kitchen or bathroom sinks where blockages frequently occur. Access points are recommended in any areas where the plumbing lines make a turn of 60 degrees or greater. This makes it easier if a snake needs to be used and can help a hydro-jet cleaning be more efficient. In residences with basements and open ceilings, additional clean-outs are relatively easy to install.

When clean-outs are placed in sewer lines outside of a home or business, set backs from the street or rear property line are usually required. Two-way clean outs are recommended in some areas. This type of installation can be beneficial when sewer lines have frequent problems with tree root growth and heavier blockage. Having an additional clean out on the outside of the property can reduce the need to have excavation done.

Clean outs do need to be installed in the correct locations not only for code requirements but to allow access for any equipment used in the cleaning process. They also need to be the correct size. Clean outs that are too small end up not being useful.
