Reverse Osmosis Systems

November 9th, 2017

Reverse osmosis systems are a popular choice for home water treatment. But are they the best choice for you? You might want better tasting water. Or you might be concerned about chlorine. Or you might be aware of problems with your water supply, such as heavy metal content or bacterial contamination. Will a reverse osmosis system take care of your problem?

If you have untreated water, probably not. There are issues of contamination that require pretreatment for safety. If you are using a pretreated supply, like city water, maybe so. Small under-sink models are common for drinking water, and work well for that use. Problems can include the cost of filters and the work of maintaining them, as well as the limited amount of water produced by such a system. In addition, there is the water usage or water waste factor. RO systems can require several gallons of water used for every gallon of treated water produced.

Should you opt for the small home system, perhaps installing it yourself, you will want to keep up your maintenance. Chlorine can damage the membrane and allow the passage of just the contaminates you are trying to filter out. Filters will need to be changed on schedule to assure the quality of water you expect.

For whole home water treatment systems, you might want to consult a professional and get some good advice, as well as educating yourself on the subject. Your water may require pretreatment as well as post filtering in order to get the results you want. While no one system can handle all water requirement, a reverse osmosis system may well be at least an important part of your water treatment solution.
