Fortunately, most of our heating systems stay trouble free. Most heating systems require very little maintenance, we need to make sure we clean our filters, keep the fuel hooked up and when we turn on our thermostat it warms our rooms to the right temperature.

Regular maintenance of your heating system can help prevent problems. Here are some things you can do before you contact a heating specialist to look at your furnace.

1. Make sure that the unit is powered. You may have blown a fuse that is causing a short in your heating system.

2. Use your reset button. Press your reset button and see if your furnace comes back on. If it does not come on, wait 30 minutes (in case the motor was hot) and try again.

3. Check the Switch. Many heating units have switches that are separate from other electrical sources. Make sure it is turned on.

4. Check your thermostat. Raise the setting by five or ten degrees to see if your furnace will come on.

5. Check Fuel Source. If you have oil, make sure you have enough oil in your tank to properly fuel your furnace. Those who heat with natural gas should check and make sure that the supply is turned on and that the pilot is properly lit.
If you have taken these five steps and your furnace is still not working it is time to consider hiring a plumbing and heating professional.
